The Certified Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN®) exam is offered twice a year, in June and December, and offers rehab nurses an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and commitment to the field through specialty certification.
ARN asked Roshni Patel, BSN RN CRRN, to answer a few questions about her experience as a rehabilitation nurse and what being CRRN certified means to her.
What is your favorite part of working in the rehabilitation nursing field?
My favorite part of working in the rehabilitation nursing field is seeing patients go HOME with FAMILY!!!!!
What do you find most challenging about being a rehabilitation nurse?
The most challenging part about being a rehabilitation nurse is having our patients buy into the belief that they CAN reach their goals if they continue to practice and not give up. When patients go home after being in acute rehabilitation, the progress and motivation needs to continue so that they reach their rehab goal, even after they are discharged from the hospital. This is only achieved when the patients believe within themselves so they can continue to strive to reach their end goal.
How does CRRN certification play into your daily practice, if at all, and how you deliver patient care?
Having the CRRN certification helps one to critically think of the skills of the nursing practice we are performing day to day, but most importantly it makes one question and remember the "why". There are many times we perform tasks because they are the correct choice to achieve our patient's BEST outcome, however at times, some tasks or practices may warrant revisions or change. Practices that we performed three to five years ago may require complete change or partial change for us to achieve the highest and best outcome for our patients. Having the certification allows me to think out of the box and assess and evaluate each situation to apply best practices.
How do you think becoming CRRN certified has impacted your career?
Becoming CRRN certified has helped me in my current job which is a shift nurse manager at EMORY hospital. With my experience, I practice bedside nursing and mentor new nurses in using best practices to care for, guide, and teach our patients.
What advice would you pass onto someone who is preparing to sit for the CRRN exam?
Study your theorist; you are not going to be tested on something you have not been exposed to; trust your answers; and read each question slowly and completely.
