Meet the Presenters
Barbara Lutz, PhD RN CRRN PHNA-BC FAHA FARN FAAN serves as the McNeill Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and is Associate Professor, Emeritus at the University of Florida, College of Nursing. Her career as a rehabilitation and public health nurse spans 40+ years. She has conducted rehabilitation nursing research related to comprehensive stroke care for more than 20 years, focusing on assessing and addressing the care needs of stroke survivors and their caregivers as they transition home. She has received funding from the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation, Sigma Theta Tau International, VA, National Institute of Nursing Research, and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. She served as President of ARN from 2019-2020 and has served on multiple committees for ARN and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA). In recognition of her service to ARN and to stroke rehabilitation nursing research, the ARN Board of Directors established the Barbara Lutz Stroke Rehabilitation Nursing Grant in 2020. Dr. Lutz is a co-author on several AHA/ASA scientific statements including palliative care in stroke, risk adjustment for stroke, and best evidence on stroke caregiver interventions. She has served on several national committees and advisory boards including the ANA Care Coordination Expert Panel, Joint Commission Technical Advisory Panel for Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification, and National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research Advisory Board. In 2018, Dr. Lutz received the AHA/ASA Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing Stroke Article of the Year Award (Lutz, et al. 2017). She was elected as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, American Heart Association, and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses. Dr. Lutz has a BSN from the University of Iowa, MS from Northern Illinois University, and MSN and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Michelle Camicia, PhD CRRN CCM NEA-BC FAHA FARN FAAN, leads in practice, research developing, and implementing innovative programs. She has improved care coordination and equitable care for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. As an advisory board member of the National Institutes of Health Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research, Dr. Camicia secured family caregiving in the Strategic Plan. She has served on numerous national boards/expert panels and as an accreditation surveyor for CARF International. Her leadership with the American Heart/Stroke Association (AHA) and Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN), including past president, provides venues to strengthen equitable care delivery for individuals with disabilities nationally and internationally. Dr. Camicia's transformational leadership has been recognized by the Kaiser Permanente Exemplary Nurse Leader of the Year award, ARN President's Award, ARN Distinguished Service Award, and ARN Doctoral-Prepared Nurse Researcher award. The ARN White Paper on The Essential Role of the Rehabilitation Nurse in Facilitating Care Transition received the ARN Article of the Year and her work on the PATH-s has been recognized by the AHA's Stroke Article of the Year. She is managing partner for PATH2Caregiving, LLC. Dr. Camicia earned a BSN from San Francisco State University, MSN from Sonoma State University, and PhD from the University of California-Davis.
