Supporting Relief in Jamaica – A Message to Our ARN Community
Our ARN community extends across borders - and in times of crisis, we stand together. Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, we're relieved to share that our members there, now part of the Northeast Texas Chapter under the guidance of current ARN Board Member, Gillian Smith, MSN RN CBIS NPD-BC FARN CRRN, are safe.
Still, recovery efforts across the island are just beginning. Consider supporting trusted organizations providing essential relief to those affected to help rebuild lives and communities.
The Situation in Jamaica
The Caribbean island of Jamaica has recently been struck by a devastating event following Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall as a Category 5 storm - among the strongest ever recorded for the region.
Key impacts include:
- Massive destruction of infrastructure: homes, hospitals, roads, and communication systems have been severely damaged.
- Significant displacement of residents and widespread power and utility outages.
- Critical humanitarian needs emerging immediately: food, water, shelter, medical support, and debris removal.
Our Call to Action: How You Can Help
We invite our members, chapters, and friends to consider contributing to the relief and recovery efforts in Jamaica. Below are trusted charities actively engaged in the response. Donations will help provide immediate relief (such as water filters, hygiene kits, shelter materials) and support longer-term recovery (rebuilding homes, restoring health services, community resilience).
Please consider donating today to one or more of the following:
- GiveDirectly – Cash relief program aimed at delivering financial resources directly to impacted families in Jamaica. GiveDirectly
- All Hands & Hearts – On the ground in Jamaica, mobilizing cleanup and rebuilding efforts. All Hands & Hearts
