What is the Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) exam?

The CRRN exam is a voluntary certification administered by the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) to validate the qualifications, specialized knowledge, and dedication to the continued education of a candidate in rehabilitation nursing.

Who is eligible to take the CRRN exam?

To be eligible for the CRRN exam, you must hold an unrestricted, current RN license for the United States, its territories, or Canada. Additionally, you must have two years of practice as a registered nurse in rehabilitation nursing or one year of practice as a registered nurse in rehabilitation and one year of advanced study in nursing within the five years preceding the exam.

How do I register for the CRRN exam?

You can apply for the examination online. The application packet will include your contact information, RN license number, and two references verifying your experience.

How much does the CRRN exam cost?

The exam costs $285.00 for ARN members and $425.00 for non-members.

How is the CRRN exam formatted?

The CRRN exam consists of 175 multiple-choice, computer-delivered questions. You will have three hours to complete the exam.

What will the CRRN exam test me on?

The CRRN exam will test you on four different domains: Rehabilitation Nursing Models and Theories, Functional Health Patterns, Function of the Rehabilitation Team and Community Reintegration, and Legislative, Economic, Ethical, and Legal Issues.

What’s in the CRRN® Exam?

The 2022 CRRN Exam is divided into four main domains:

Nursing Models and Theories (8%): This domain focuses on understanding and applying nursing models and theories as a framework for rehabilitation nursing practice. It also emphasizes incorporating relevant research, nursing models, and theories into individualized patient-centered rehabilitation care.

Functional Health Patterns (53%): This domain involves applying the nursing process to optimize the restoration and preservation of the patient’s health and holistic well-being across the lifespan. It also includes promoting optimal psychosocial patterns and coping and stress management skills of the patients and caregivers, optimizing the patient’s functional ability, managing the patient’s neurological and other complex medical conditions, promoting optimal nutrition and hydration, optimizing the patient’s elimination patterns, and optimizing the patient’s sleep and rest patterns.

The Function of the Rehabilitation Team and Transitions of Care (12%): This domain focuses on collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to achieve patient-centered goals and applying the nursing process to promote the patient’s community reintegration or transition to the next level of care.

Legislative, Economic, Ethical, and Legal Issues (27%): This domain involves integrating legislation and regulations in the management of care, delivering cost-effective patient-centered care, incorporating ethical considerations and legal obligations that affect nursing practice, promoting a safe environment of care for patients and staff to minimize risk, and integrating quality improvement processes into nursing practice.
